What ELQ stands for and why it exists
ELQ stands for Entry Level Qualification. Tech Mahindra runs it under a broader framework called the National Level Test for Hiring (NLTH), which standardises the assessment across all fresher hiring drives, whether on-campus or off-campus.
Before the NLTH-based ELQ format, Tech Mahindra ran a test variant called the Elevate Program, where verbal ability was folded into the general aptitude section without a separate communication cut-off. The current ELQ separates communication into its own independently scored section. English proficiency now has to be demonstrated on its own, not averaged against a strong quantitative or logical score.
The reason is straightforward. Tech Mahindra’s accounts include client-facing roles where engineers write, read, and communicate in English regularly. The earlier bundled format could advance candidates who scored high on quantitative sections while performing significantly below average on verbal. The independent communication cut-off removes that trade-off from the equation.
ELQ is the gate between a candidate’s application and entry into the interview stage. The ELQ result appears on screen before leaving the session; candidates who clear it move directly to the story-writing exercise.
The three sections — structure and what each tests
The ELQ test contains four sections. Three are elimination rounds; the fourth is not.

Aptitude
The aptitude section tests quantitative ability, logical reasoning, and verbal reasoning. Quantitative topics include percentages, profit and loss, time-speed-distance, time and work, and data interpretation. Logical reasoning covers coding-decoding, series, blood relations, and seating arrangements. The verbal component includes reading comprehension, sentence correction, and vocabulary-in-context.
The 142-minute window averages under two minutes per question. Timed practice matters: most candidates manage quantitative and logical segments within the window, but reading comprehension passages consume more time per question than standalone items.

Technical
The technical section runs 25 MCQs and one coding problem in 65 minutes. The MCQs test CS fundamentals: programming language output tracing (C, Java, Python), data structures, operating systems, DBMS, and computer networks. The coding problem is typically easy to medium in difficulty, covering string manipulation, arrays, or basic recursion and iteration.
The coding problem is the section’s key variable. A complete solution that clears all test cases, including edge cases and not just the base case, is what distinguishes the premium-track routing from the standard-track routing at offer stage.
Communication
The communication section runs approximately 18 questions in approximately 20 minutes. Grammar correction, vocabulary-in-context, reading comprehension passages, and sentence completion are the formats. The window is tighter than it looks when a comprehension passage is included; timed practice with full-length passages is the most direct preparation for this section.
Psychometric
The psychometric section follows the three elimination sections and is untimed. It does not directly eliminate candidates. Results may be shared with interview panels as background context, but the psychometric result is not a gate between ELQ and the story-writing exercise.
How sectional cut-offs work
The operative rule: each of the three elimination sections carries its own independent cut-off. A high aptitude score does not compensate for a weak communication score. All three sectional thresholds must be cleared separately for a candidate to advance.
The aptitude and communication sections carry no negative marking. An incorrect answer scores zero; an unanswered question also scores zero. Full-attempt strategy is rational when unsure: rule out two clearly wrong options and pick between the remaining two rather than leaving a question blank.
The coding problem uses partial-credit scoring. A solution that clears some test cases earns proportional marks. Attempting the problem and clearing no test cases earns zero, with no deduction.

The ELQ test runs in a browser-based proctored environment. A stable internet connection and a working webcam are required before the slot opens. Most candidates complete all four sections, including the non-elimination psychometric round, within three and a half hours.
The result displays on screen as soon as the candidate submits the final section. There is no waiting period, no email confirmation delay, no batch-result cycle. A candidate who clears the ELQ threshold sees the shortlisting notice before leaving the testing session.
The story-writing exercise follows in the same session. Candidates who are shortlisted after ELQ do not schedule a separate slot; the exercise begins on the same platform in continuation. The premium track is not a separate application. It is a selection-within-selection: candidates who submit a coding solution that passes all test cases, combined with consistently strong MCQ coverage across the technical section, are routed to a more demanding technical interview.
