Microsoft India runs three distinct fresher hiring tracks, and each has its own branch list, CGPA threshold, and application path.

Knowing which track you are eligible for determines where your prep time is best spent. This guide covers all three.

Three Tracks: Explore, SDE New Grad, and MSR Research Fellow

TrackWho it targetsTypeLocations
Explore InternshipPre-final year undergraduates2-month paid internshipHyderabad, Bangalore
SDE New GradFinal-year and recently graduated studentsFull-time employmentHyderabad, Bangalore
MSR Research FellowFresh MS or PhD with research outputFellowshipBangalore

The Explore program, formerly called Engage, is a 2-month paid internship for pre-final year students. Participants rotate through three Microsoft product teams across Azure, Microsoft 365, Teams, Bing, and Copilot. Strong performers receive an SWE internship offer for the following year, which typically converts to a full-time role. That pipeline makes the Explore track an unusually direct route for students at eligible campuses.

The SDE New Grad track targets final-year and recently graduated students for full-time Software Engineer roles. Microsoft’s early career page defines eligibility as graduating within 12 months of the hire date. Applications flow through your campus placement cell or directly via careers.microsoft.com. The Hyderabad campus (ITICD) hosts the majority of India-based SDE roles; it is Microsoft’s largest engineering campus outside Redmond. Product teams in Hyderabad and Bangalore work across Azure, Microsoft 365, Teams, Bing, and Copilot, with India-based teams contributing to Copilot backend engineering and Azure AI platform development.

Microsoft Research India, based in Bangalore, handles fundamental research in machine learning, AI, systems, and social computing. Research Fellow openings target students completing an MS or entering fresh from a research-intensive master’s program. The annual cohort is small and highly selective. Research output (pre-prints, conference submissions, or publications) carries more weight in shortlisting here than CGPA alone.

Branch and Degree Eligibility

The Explore program lists Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, and Cybersecurity as eligible disciplines, a broader set than most students expect. ECE students with strong DSA fundamentals are within reach for the internship.

For SDE New Grad, the job description in your placement notice is the binding document. If it says B.E./B.Tech in CS, IT, or related engineering, ECE is typically in scope. If it specifies CS/IT only, that is the floor. Do not assume from last year’s drive; check the current notice.

Accepted degree types across both tracks: B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, and dual-degree programs. Integrated 5-year degrees also qualify, provided the terminal degree is a B.Tech or M.Tech.

CGPA and Backlog Requirements

Microsoft does not publish a universal CGPA cutoff for SDE fresher roles in India. The eligibility threshold is set per drive, per campus, in the placement notice.

In practice, campus placement cells shortlist resumes before Microsoft reviews them. Based on widely reported campus drives, the common shortlisting filters are:

  • 7.5 CGPA: the most frequently cited floor across reported campus drives for SDE roles
  • 8.0 CGPA: used as the shortlist threshold at some IIT and top-NIT drives
  • Below 7.5: generally below the campus shortlisting bar, though off-campus applications have more flexibility

Three requirements that apply broadly:

  • No active backlogs is a near-universal criterion across campus drives. A single cleared historical backlog may be accepted in some drives; active arrears typically disqualify.
  • Off-campus applications have more flexibility. When SDE New Grad roles are listed on careers.microsoft.com, CGPA is one signal among several. A strong public coding profile — competitive programming rankings (ICPC, Codeforces), GitHub contributions, or deployed side projects — can offset a CGPA closer to 7.0.
  • MSR Research Fellow evaluation is research-first. A candidate with strong publication output or a well-cited pre-print at a lower CGPA will fare better in MSR India’s shortlisting than a candidate with a high CGPA and no research output.

Selection Process, Round by Round

Explore Internship (pre-final year)

  • Shortlisting from eligible partner campuses
  • Online coding assessment
  • Technical Round 1: DSA coding, 45 to 60 minutes
  • Technical Round 2: product thinking — framing problems, communicating tradeoffs across three product teams
  • HR conversation

SDE New Grad (final-year and recent graduates)

  • Resume screening: campus placement cell submits eligible resumes; Microsoft early career team does first review
  • Online coding assessment: DSA problems on a proctored platform, timed format
  • Technical Round 1: DSA coding, with explanation of approach and complexity
  • Technical Round 2: DSA plus introductory system design (“design a URL shortener,” “design a rate limiter”)
  • Technical Round 3: behavioral coding plus growth-mindset questions
  • HR round: location preference (Hyderabad or Bangalore), role discussion

The online assessment covers arrays, strings, trees, graphs, and dynamic programming, matching what Microsoft campus drives have emphasised across India. Tree and graph problems appear more frequently in Microsoft’s question pool than in most Indian service-company assessments. If you have been practising only arrays and sorting, add trees and graphs to your preparation queue before the drive.

Campus Access vs. Off-Campus Routes

The Explore internship has no off-campus path. Applications are accepted only from partner institutions: IITs, top NITs, BITS Pilani, VIT, and a select group listed in each year’s drive announcement.

SDE New Grad is primarily campus-driven, but the India careers page lists open roles including new grad positions when available. Students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 colleges have cleared Microsoft’s initial off-campus filter. The platform does not auto-reject by institution name. What carries the application through is a coding profile that speaks before the resume reaches a human reviewer: contest rankings, open-source contributions, or projects that demonstrate production-quality thinking.

One practical step: create a profile at careers.microsoft.com, complete the application with your GitHub and LinkedIn, and set job alerts for India, Software Engineer, and New Grad. Microsoft does not advertise off-campus drives widely. The careers portal is the most reliable place to catch them when they open. Checking once every two to three weeks during the August to November recruitment season keeps you from missing a short application window.

The eligibility criteria set the entry conditions. Beyond that, preparation decides the outcome. The Microsoft placement papers and test pattern guide covers the online assessment format in detail: the section structure, timing, and the problem types that appear most in India campus drives. Start there once you have confirmed your eligibility and chosen a track. For the interview rounds that follow, the Microsoft interview questions guide for freshers covers the DSA problems and behavioral questions that recur across campus drives in India.

Frequently asked questions

What CGPA does Microsoft require for freshers in India?

Microsoft does not publish an official CGPA cutoff. Campus placement cells typically shortlist at 7.5 or above for SDE roles, though the exact threshold varies by campus and the specific drive notice.

Which branches are eligible for Microsoft India SDE roles?

CSE, IT, Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering are the strongest fit. ECE is often included when the job notice says CS/IT or related engineering. Mechanical, Civil, and other non-computing branches are generally not eligible for SDE roles.

Is the Microsoft Explore internship open to off-campus students?

No. The Explore program is campus-only and restricted to students at select partner institutions: IITs, top NITs, BITS Pilani, VIT, and a few others. There is no off-campus application path for the Explore program.

How many interview rounds does Microsoft India conduct for freshers?

The typical sequence is: online coding assessment, three technical interview rounds (DSA focus, system design basics, and behavioral), and an HR round — five stages in total.

What is the difference between Explore internship and SDE New Grad?

Explore is a 2-month paid internship for pre-final year students that rotates participants through three product teams. Strong performers receive SWE internship offers the following year, leading to full-time employment. SDE New Grad is a direct full-time role for final-year and recently graduated students.

Can students from Tier-2 or Tier-3 colleges apply to Microsoft?

Campus SDE hiring is concentrated at IITs and top NITs. Students from Tier-2 or Tier-3 colleges can apply via careers.microsoft.com for off-campus openings when listed. A strong DSA profile, competitive programming ranking, or notable open-source contributions improves shortlisting odds significantly.

Can ECE students apply to Microsoft SDE roles in India?

Often yes, provided the specific job notice includes ECE or related engineering disciplines. The Explore program explicitly lists Electrical Engineering as an eligible discipline. For SDE New Grad, check the exact eligibility criteria in the placement notice from your college.
