HCL Recruitment Test 2026: Pattern and Cutoff

HCLTech’s online recruitment test for freshers runs 60 questions across four sections in 60 minutes, with no negative marking on any section.

That 60-60 structure has held consistently across on-campus and off-campus drives. It is the first gate in HCLTech’s fresher selection, and the cutoff mechanics are simpler than most candidates expect.

The 2026 Test Pattern at a Glance

Some drives add an optional General Knowledge section of around 5 questions covering HCLTech’s history, key milestones, and recent partnerships. The GK section is qualifying in nature. The four core sections in the table are constant across drives.

The test runs online through HCLTech’s partner platforms, including AMCAT in some hiring cycles. You cannot transfer unused time between sections; once a section’s 15 minutes runs out, it closes regardless of how many questions remain unanswered.

How the Cutoff Works in Practice

HCLTech does not publish official section cutoff scores publicly. The floor referenced across placement preparation communities and consistent across candidate reports from multiple hiring cycles is roughly 11 correct answers out of 15 per section. In question terms:

• Minimum correct to clear each section: approximately 11 out of 15 (the widely reported 70% floor)
• Safer preparation target: 12 to 13 correct per section
• Margin you can afford at the minimum: 4 to 5 wrong or blank per section

Three things follow from this structure.

First, every section is a separate gate. Clearing Quantitative with 15 out of 15 does nothing for a Verbal section where you scored 9. Both must independently clear the floor.

Second, no negative marking changes the risk calculation completely. A blank answer and a wrong answer both score zero. There is no reason to leave any question unanswered. Exit with every question attempted, even if several are best guesses in the final 30 seconds.

Third, the 1-minute-per-question pace is firm. At 45 seconds on a question with no clear path to an answer, mark your best guess and move forward. Spending 3 minutes on one Logical Reasoning puzzle while leaving two easier questions unread is the most common way candidates fail sections they were otherwise prepared to clear.

Preparation goal: build to 12 to 13 correct per section, not 11. The 11-question floor is a floor, not a finishing line.

Academic Eligibility Cutoffs

The aptitude test invitation comes after HCLTech screens academic eligibility. Standard track requirements for BE/BTech candidates:

• At least 60% in Class 10
• At least 60% in Class 12 (or diploma equivalent)
• At least 60% aggregate in the engineering degree (CGPA of 6.0 or higher)
• No active backlogs at the time of the interview

All three academic levels must independently clear the threshold. A strong degree CGPA does not offset a weak Class 10 or Class 12 score.

Some roles and HCLTech programs carry higher academic thresholds. The AMP (Accelerate, Mentor, Perform) track and certain specialist roles at specific locations specify stricter requirements. Check the specific drive notification or your placement cell communication before applying, as the exact bar varies by program and location.

Branch eligibility for the standard track typically covers CSE, IT, ECE, and EEE graduates. Mechanical and other branches appear in some drives. HCLTech also applies a 6-month re-application cooldown: if you attended the selection process in the past 6 months, or your application was rejected within that window, you must wait before applying again.

What Each Section Tests

Quantitative Aptitude covers high-school arithmetic throughout: number system, time and work, time-speed-distance, profit and loss, HCF and LCM, probability, and permutations and combinations. No engineering-level calculus or matrices appear. Difficulty sits at easy to moderate.

Logical Reasoning tests deductive speed: number series, coding-decoding, directional sense, syllogisms, data sufficiency, and pattern analogies. Set-based questions appear in some drives, each presenting one scenario with three or four sub-questions attached. If a set looks complex, skip to individual questions first and return to the set with remaining time. Individual questions are lower-risk: one mark gained or lost per item, not three or four from a single slow read. This section is where most candidates feel the 15-minute pressure most acutely.

Verbal Ability tests English grammar and reading comprehension. Reading comprehension passages run roughly 150 to 250 words, making this more approachable than CAT-style Verbal. Grammar questions cover subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and articles. Vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms) and sentence correction complete the section.

Technical covers computer science fundamentals: data structures, object-oriented programming, operating systems, DBMS, networking basics, and code output prediction from short C, C++, or Java snippets. Non-CS branches with coursework in OS or DBMS are not at a major disadvantage. Code output prediction is the least predictable element; passive concept revision is not enough. Run at least 5 dedicated sessions of 10 code-output problems each before the test date; reading code under time pressure is a skill that builds only through timed repetition.

After the Online Test: Stages and Salary

Candidates who clear all four sections proceed to two interview rounds:

1. Technical Interview — 30 to 45 minutes. Tests programming fundamentals, data structures, OS, DBMS, and typically includes a live coding problem. The overlap with the Technical section syllabus is substantial; the two preparation paths are, for practical purposes, the same activity.

2. HR Interview — 20 to 30 minutes. Covers career goals, relocation willingness, communication clarity, and company knowledge.

The aptitude test result places you in the selection pool. The track you land on depends on the profile you present in the technical interview, not on how far above the cutoff you score in the online test.
