EY’s online aptitude test is the first elimination round in its campus process: 50 to 65 questions across 60 to 90 minutes, covering Quant, Verbal, Logical Reasoning, and a Situational Strength component in most recent drives.

The format is more predictable than students assume. Clearing it comes down to section-wise preparation, not last-minute revision.

What the EY Online Assessment Actually Tests

EY recruits freshers through two main tracks in India: the core advisory and assurance businesses, and EY Global Delivery Services (GDS), which handles the bulk of tech-role hiring. The aptitude test structure differs slightly between these tracks. For a full picture of where this test sits in the campus timeline, the EY placement guide for freshers covers the complete hiring sequence.

For most campus drives, the online assessment has three mandatory sections: Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, and Logical Reasoning. In addition, expect either a Technical MCQ section (for EY GDS tech roles) or a Situational Strength Test (for consulting, assurance, and advisory roles). Some patterns include both.

The test is proctored online, taken from a campus lab or your own device during a scheduled slot. Time is strictly sectional: you cannot carry unused minutes from one section into the next.

No negative marking has been the consistent report across recent EY campus drives, but that instruction appears on your test screen before each section. Read it before you start.

Section-Wise Pattern and Syllabus

Two common structures appear in 2025 to 2026 EY campus drives. Freshers Job’s compiled EY syllabus data, which aggregates recent drive reports from campus placements across India, documents both.

Pattern A (non-tech and advisory roles):

SectionQuestionsTime (min)
Quantitative Aptitude12–2012–20
Logical Reasoning12–1512–20
Verbal Ability12–1510–18
Situational Strength Test~20~20
Total~55–70~55–75

Pattern B (EY GDS tech roles):

SectionQuestionsTime (min)
Quantitative Aptitude2020
Logical Reasoning1520
Verbal Ability1510
Technical MCQ1515
Total6565

Treat these as reference structures. Section counts and time splits vary by college batch and role.

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratios and proportions
  • Time and work, time-speed-distance, pipes and cisterns
  • Data interpretation: tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts; questions often chain two operations (find a ratio, then apply a percentage)
  • Number systems, HCF/LCM, basic progressions; permutation and combination appear occasionally

Logical Reasoning

  • Seating arrangements (linear and circular), scheduling puzzles
  • Syllogisms, statement-conclusion, statement-assumption
  • Coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense
  • Number and letter series, pattern recognition

Verbal Ability

  • Reading comprehension: short to medium passages with inference and main-idea questions
  • Error spotting, sentence correction, grammar (tenses, prepositions, subject-verb agreement)
  • Synonyms, antonyms, cloze tests
  • Para jumbles (sentence rearrangement into a coherent paragraph)

Technical MCQ (EY GDS tech roles only)

  • Programming basics in C, Java, or Python: arrays, pointers, OOP, basic algorithms
  • CS fundamentals: DBMS (SQL queries, normalisation), OS basics, networking, SDLC
  • For testing roles: test-case design, defect lifecycle

The Situational Strength Test: What It Measures

The Situational Strength Test (SST) appears in most non-tech EY drives and deserves separate attention. It does not test aptitude in any conventional sense.

Each question presents a workplace scenario: a client complaint, a team conflict, an ethical grey area. You rank four response options from most to least effective, or choose the single best response. All four options are written to seem defensible. The right answer is rarely the most aggressive or the most passive one.

According to CareertTestPrep’s overview of the EY online assessment, EY’s SST specifically assesses competencies around integrity, client focus, teamwork, and adaptability, which are values EY makes explicit in its published framework.

There is no formula-based prep for the SST. The useful framing: prefer responses that prioritise client impact over personal convenience, that acknowledge mistakes clearly, and that seek input before acting unilaterally. Responses that cover up an error or escalate a minor issue without attempting resolution first consistently score poorly.

One practical point: SST questions are often timed per question, not per section. Deliberating too long on early questions leaves later ones rushed. The pattern to watch out for is spending two minutes on a scenario that warrants thirty seconds of reflection and a decisive choice.

Section-by-Section Preparation Plan

Three to four weeks of focused daily practice is sufficient for most students who already have basic aptitude groundwork from their second or third year.

Quantitative Aptitude (10 to 15 days)

  • Start with arithmetic and percentage problems; these appear in every drive
  • Move to time-work and time-speed-distance after arithmetic is solid
  • Practice DI with sets of 4 to 5 questions per chart, focusing on two-step operations
  • DI questions take disproportionate time; never spend more than 2 minutes on a single DI set during practice — build the habit of cutting losses and moving on

Logical Reasoning (7 to 10 days)

  • Seating arrangements and puzzles are the largest chunk; practice these daily
  • One syllogism set and one series set per day maintains speed without burning prep time
  • Blood relations and direction sense respond quickly to formula memorisation
  • For complex arrangement puzzles, fix one constraint first and build from it; trying to hold all constraints simultaneously slows every answer

Verbal Ability (parallel with Quant and Logical)

  • Read one comprehension passage daily and answer without re-reading; simulate test pacing
  • One error-spotting set per day closes grammar gaps faster than reviewing theory
  • For para jumbles, practice finding the mandatory opening sentence first — most RC passages have a definitive opener that rules out half the possible orderings immediately
  • Vocabulary questions (synonyms, antonyms) are the fastest to score; dedicate 10 minutes daily to word-meaning drills in the final week

Technical MCQ (EY GDS roles, 5 to 7 days)

  • Cover OS, DBMS, and networking before moving to language-specific questions
  • SQL queries and normalisation appear repeatedly; drill these separately
  • OOP concepts (inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation) are standard MCQ territory; know the difference between compile-time and runtime polymorphism

Work through EY-specific question banks from FACE Prep’s EY placement papers collection to match the question style and check your sectional pacing before the drive date.

On Test Day

Two practical points that affect scores more than last-minute revision:

  • Sectional time limits are strict. If a section closes while you are mid-question, that answer does not save. Move through each section at a pace that leaves 3 to 4 minutes at the end for review.
  • Attempt every question if there is no negative marking. Skipping is a guaranteed zero; a guess has positive expected value. The instructions on your test screen will confirm the negative-marking rule for each section before you begin.

Technical issues (camera not detected, timer lag, browser crashes) are handled by the invigilator or the platform’s support channel. Note the support contact shown at the test start and raise any issue immediately, not after the session ends.

One preparation step that students skip: take at least one full-length timed mock in the same browser and hardware you plan to use for the actual test. Discovering that your webcam freezes under screen-share proctoring is better done in a mock than ten minutes into the real assessment.

Clearing the aptitude test is the gate to EY’s interview rounds, not the finish line. The EY campus recruitment process overview covers what follows in sequence: the technical interview, the HR round, and the values-based partner discussion. Before that, work through the EY placement papers to check whether your section-wise timing is already where it needs to be.
