Two days is enough time to go from unprepared to competitive on AMCAT, if you sequence the modules correctly.

AMCAT (Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test) is now run by SHL India after SHL acquired Aspiring Minds in 2019. The test uses a computer-adaptive format: answer the first few questions correctly, and the system serves harder questions that carry more scoring weight. Most 2-day prep plans go wrong because they start with easy practice and spend too little time on the fundamentals that drive early accuracy.

This plan covers both compulsory modules (English and Quantitative) and the optional CS module for CSE and IT students. If you are from ECE, EEE, Mechanical, or Civil, swap the CS module for your branch-specific optional. The structure stays the same.

What AMCAT Actually Tests

AMCAT has two compulsory modules that every candidate takes and a set of optional modules selected by discipline.

Compulsory modules (required for all):

  • English Communication: Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension
  • Quantitative Ability: Arithmetic, Algebra, Mensuration, Time-Speed-Distance, Permutation and Combination

Optional modules (selected by branch and target role):

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Computer Science Fundamentals
  • Automata Fix (coding challenge module)
  • Electronics and Electrical Engineering (ECE and EEE students)
  • Mechanical Engineering (Mechanical and Civil students)

The adaptive format matters more than most students realise. Each section opens at medium difficulty. Answer the first three to five questions correctly, and the system serves harder questions that carry more weight in the final percentile calculation. Get those wrong, and the difficulty drops accordingly. Your first few minutes in each section set the trajectory for the whole section.

For a complete topic-by-topic breakdown of each module, see the AMCAT module-wise syllabus guide.

Day 1: English and Quantitative Ability

Keep a clear split: English Communication in the morning and Quantitative Ability in the afternoon. Mixing both in the same sitting dilutes focus and makes it harder to track which module still has gaps.

English Communication (Morning)

Start with Grammar. The AMCAT English module tests subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, and sentence correction. You don’t need exhaustive grammar study. You need to close the specific gaps you already know you have.

Suggested time allocation:

  • Spend 45 minutes on grammar rules. Cover three categories: tenses, prepositions, and sentence correction.
  • Spend 60 minutes on vocabulary. Work from AMCAT-specific word lists rather than GRE vocabulary. AMCAT vocabulary questions test contextual usage, not obscure definitions.
  • Spend the remaining time on five to six Reading Comprehension passages. Time yourself strictly: the test gives roughly two to three minutes per passage.

For Reading Comprehension, the trap is passive reading. Read each passage actively by locating the author’s main claim in the first paragraph, then answer questions from that frame. Most inference questions are answerable from the opening and closing paragraphs without rereading the full text.

Quantitative Ability (Afternoon)

AMCAT Quant tests arithmetic and basic algebra at moderate difficulty. Students from non-Maths backgrounds often underestimate this section and over-prepare the CS module. That is the wrong trade.

Spend the first 90 minutes revising formulas across six topic areas: percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time-work, time-speed-distance, and permutation-combination basics. Then spend 90 minutes solving problems from AMCAT previous papers and most-repeated questions, not from a generic aptitude textbook. AMCAT Quant leans heavily toward word problems, not pure computation.

One specific note on permutation-combination: these questions appear in most AMCAT Quant sittings. If this is a weak area, allocate 30 minutes to the three standard cases (linear arrangements, circular arrangements, and selection problems), rather than trying to cover the full topic overnight. Depth on the common cases beats shallow coverage of all cases.

Day 2: Technical Module and Mock Test

Technical Module (Morning)

For CSE and IT students, the AMCAT Computer Science module covers:

  • Data Structures: arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, basic graphs
  • Algorithms: searching, sorting, time-complexity analysis
  • Programming Concepts: OOP principles, pointers, recursion
  • Operating Systems: process management, memory management
  • Database Management: basic SQL, normalisation concepts
  • Computer Networks: OSI model, TCP/IP basics

That is a significant amount for one morning. The fix is to go narrow and deep on three or four topics rather than shallow across all six. Data Structures and Programming Concepts appear most consistently across AMCAT previous papers and practice tests.

Do not try to learn new algorithms on Day 2. If you have never implemented a tree traversal or a sorting algorithm before, Day 2 morning is not the time to start from scratch. Reinforce what you already know. That improves both speed and accuracy under test conditions.

Full-Length Mock Test (Afternoon)

The official AMCAT practice portal at myamcat.com offers paid mock tests that closely simulate the actual exam interface. If you don’t have access, construct a timed simulation using sample papers with the same section time limits.

Run one full-length mock under realistic conditions: no interruptions, phone off, each section timed strictly. Then spend 60 to 90 minutes reviewing wrong answers. Don’t re-study topics at this stage. Categorise the errors instead.

Three error categories to identify:

  • Conceptual errors: you did not know the rule or formula. Requires a targeted 15-minute review session.
  • Calculation errors: you knew the method but made arithmetic mistakes. Slow down by 10 seconds per problem in the actual test.
  • Time errors: you ran out of time. Pacing needs adjustment, not knowledge.

The mock result tells you where to spend your final evening. If most errors are conceptual, do one focused revision session before sleeping. If most are calculation or time errors, sleep is more productive than more study.

On Test Day

AMCAT is a proctored online test taken on your own device or at a designated test centre. Check AMCAT exam dates, fees, and eligibility criteria to confirm your test slot and the technical requirements at least one day in advance.

Night before:

  • Test your webcam, microphone, and internet connection. Proctoring software will reject the session if these don’t meet the minimum spec.
  • Clear your test environment. The proctoring system flags a second monitor and a smartphone visible on the desk.
  • Have your government-issued photo ID ready.
  • Sleep at least seven hours.

On the morning of the test, eat before you start. Low blood sugar affects calculation speed more than most students account for. In each section, treat the first five questions as the highest-priority part of the sitting. The adaptive algorithm weights early answers heavily. Don’t guess on the opening questions unless time genuinely forces it.

AMCAT and AI-Era Placements

AMCAT scores stay valid for 12 months from the test date. Clearing the relevant threshold opens a direct pipeline to SHL’s partner-company hiring across IT services, analytics support, and customer-experience roles. For most of those roles, a strong compulsory-module score is the entire pre-placement filter.

What is shifting is that a growing share of roles above the entry service tier also screen for evidence of applied AI skills. AMCAT won’t test for this, but the companies using AMCAT scores to shortlist candidates increasingly check for it in subsequent interview rounds.

The 2-day plan above clears the first screening gate. The second gate at product companies and AI-facing teams is a portfolio showing you can work with current tools. TinkerLLM at ₹299 is where most students begin that track.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really prepare for AMCAT in just 2 days?

Yes, if you already have a foundation in the test topics. Two focused days covering the compulsory modules and one full-length mock test is enough to move from unprepared to competitive, particularly if your college coursework covered the quantitative and technical areas.

Is Logical Reasoning compulsory in AMCAT?

Logical Reasoning is an optional module in AMCAT. Some companies specifically request it as part of their shortlisting process, so check the job listing before deciding whether to include it. For most IT service roles, English and Quant scores are the primary filters.

How long are AMCAT scores valid?

AMCAT scores are valid for 12 months from the date of the test. You can use the same score to apply to multiple companies during that period without retaking the exam.

What percentile should I aim for in AMCAT?

Cutoffs vary by company and role. Most large IT services firms use AMCAT as an initial filter and set their own thresholds. Check each company's eligibility criteria directly on the job listing rather than targeting a single number across all companies.

Should CSE students include the Automata Fix coding module?

Include Automata Fix if the companies you are targeting specifically ask for it in their listing, or if you are comfortable with at least two programming problem types. If coding is a weak area and your 2-day window is tight, prioritise the CS Fundamentals module and skip Automata Fix for this attempt.
