Three distinct spoken-English assessments appear in Indian campus hiring in 2026: AMCAT SVAR by SHL India, Versant by Pearson, and company-built tests from employers like Accenture and IBM.

Most students encounter one of them and assume it’s the standard. It isn’t. Each comes from a different vendor, runs on a different platform, and appears at a different point in a hiring funnel. The same applies to students at Tier-2 and Tier-3 colleges: the test you face depends on which company you are applying to, not on your geography or college ranking. Preparing for the wrong one wastes time you don’t have. The reassuring part: the underlying spoken-English skill is the same across all three spoken formats, so most of your prep transfers.

This article maps the differences and tells you which one you’re likely to face.

Three types of communication tests in Indian campus hiring

The assessment market has not converged on a single product. What actually exists:

TypePublisherFormatDurationScore scale
AMCAT SVARSHL India (formerly Aspiring Minds)Browser-based, microphone, 6 sections16 to 20 min0 to 900 (percentile)
Versant English TestPearsonBrowser-based, microphone, 6 task types15 to 20 min20 to 80
Company-built (Accenture, IBM, others)Employer-specificVaries by employerVariesVaries

SVAR and Versant are third-party vendor products. A company licenses one and runs it as part of their hiring pipeline. Company-built tests are proprietary: Accenture’s version and IBM’s version share no platform and test different skills.

The most common confusion is treating SVAR and Versant as two names for the same test. They are not. Different publishers, different scoring scales, different employers tend to use each. Prep transfers between them because the skill is similar. The products are distinct.

AMCAT SVAR: when and where it shows up

SVAR is not a standalone product. It is a module within the AMCAT platform that SHL India operates after acquiring Aspiring Minds in 2019. If a company invites you to an AMCAT session, your session may include aptitude, coding, and SVAR in sequence, all on the same platform. The spoken-English component of that AMCAT session is SVAR.

The practical signal: if your placement drive runs on AMCAT, expect SVAR as the spoken-English gate.

Standard SVAR format across six sections:

SectionWhat you do
Reading AloudSee a sentence on screen, read it clearly
Listening RepeatHear a sentence, repeat it verbatim
Listening DeductionsListen to a conversation, answer comprehension questions
GrammarIdentify the grammatically correct spoken form
Error IdentificationSpot and correct errors spoken to you
Open SpeakingSpeak for 30 to 45 seconds on a given topic

Duration: 16 to 20 minutes. Scoring: percentile-based on a 0 to 900 scale. Every response is graded by AI; no human listens to your audio in the standard scoring path.

For section-by-section prep strategy and score benchmarks by role type, the complete guide to the SVAR test for 2026 covers what the AI grader actually measures in each section and what percentile to target.

Versant: the Pearson alternative

Pearson’s Versant English Test is a standalone product. It does not bundle with aptitude or coding assessments. When a company uses Versant, you receive a separate invite with a Pearson test link rather than an AMCAT session. That separation is the clearest early signal that you are sitting Versant and not SVAR.

Standard Versant format across six task types:

TaskWhat you do
Reading AloudRead printed sentences aloud
Repeat SentencesHear a sentence, repeat it exactly
Short Answer QuestionsHear a question, give a 1 to 4 word answer
Sentence BuildsHear jumbled words, arrange and speak them in correct order
Story RetellingHear a short story, retell it in your own words
Open QuestionsSpeak for 45 seconds on a given prompt

Duration: 15 to 20 minutes. Scoring: 20 to 80 scale with subscores for Sentence Mastery, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Pronunciation.

Among employers known to use Versant in India: Deloitte USI for client-facing and BPO-track fresher roles, and Concentrix, which lists Versant on their careers page as the test used to screen communication skills in their hiring process. Some employers run Versant alongside AMCAT for different roles in the same hiring drive.

The Versant test guide for freshers covers task-by-task scoring detail and the prep approach for each of the six Versant tasks.

Company-built communication tests

Two company-built tests appear often enough in campus placement cycles to warrant separate preparation.

Accenture’s Communication Assessment

Accenture’s Communication Assessment is proprietary, with no SVAR or Versant platform underneath it. It runs as the first gate in Accenture’s selection process, before the Cognitive Ability test or any interview round. Six sections, 63 questions, a 20 to 30 second response window per question, all AI-graded. The section structure bears some resemblance to SVAR: both open with Reading Aloud and include listening and comprehension tasks. The question bank and platform are Accenture-specific.

The Accenture Communication Assessment guide has the full section breakdown, sample questions for each type, and the response-window details.

IBM’s Business Communication Test

IBM’s Business Communication Test (BCT) is a different category entirely. It is a written verbal test: 15 questions on grammar, synonyms, antonyms, active-passive voice conversion, and formal email and letter etiquette. No microphone, no speaking. The cutoff is the 40th percentile.

BCT doesn’t test spoken fluency. Students who have prepared for SVAR and Versant often discover this mismatch after seeing the IBM test format. The prep overlap is minimal beyond basic grammatical accuracy: IBM BCT requires a separate revision pass through written grammar and formal business-English conventions.

What carries over across all three spoken tests

SVAR, Versant, and Accenture’s test all measure spoken English produced clearly under time pressure. The AI grader, regardless of whether it belongs to SHL or Pearson or Accenture, evaluates four consistent dimensions: pronunciation clarity, fluency, comprehension accuracy, and sentence production under timing constraints.

Practical habits that apply to all three:

  • Read short paragraphs aloud daily. Five to ten minutes on any text builds the pacing habits the AI rewards.
  • Drill sentence repetition. Hear a sentence, pause, say it back accurately. Every spoken test in this cluster includes a variation of this task.
  • Practice the 30 to 45 second speaking task. Set a timer, pick any topic, speak without stopping. The open-speaking section appears in all three test formats.
  • Build grammatical accuracy in speech: correct subject-verb agreement, articles in the right place, no dropped prepositions.

IBM BCT is the exception to the prep-transfer rule. Formal email conventions and written grammar rules need dedicated revision beyond spoken-fluency drills.

For a structured daily practice plan that covers the spoken-English components common across SVAR, Versant, and Accenture’s test, the guide to communication skills for campus placements outlines a routine that covers active listening and the habit of speaking in structured sentences before your first test invite arrives. Once you know which specific test you are sitting, the complete SVAR guide or the Versant guide adds the section-level detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SVAR and Versant?

SVAR is SHL India's spoken-English module delivered within the AMCAT platform. Versant is Pearson's standalone spoken-English test. Both measure the same core skill on similar task formats, and prep transfers cleanly between the two. The key difference is delivery: SVAR is bundled with an AMCAT aptitude or coding session; Versant arrives as a separate invite linking to Pearson's portal.

Which companies use SVAR and which use Versant in India 2026?

SVAR is most common in IT/ITes companies and BPOs that already use AMCAT for aptitude and coding screening. Versant is used by BPO and customer-experience firms — Concentrix lists it on their careers page — and consulting firms like Deloitte for client-facing roles. Some companies use one or the other depending on the hiring stream; check your invite email for the platform name.

Does Accenture use SVAR or Versant for hiring?

Neither. Accenture runs its own proprietary Communication Assessment with 6 sections and 63 questions, all AI-graded. The section structure is closer to SVAR than to a written test, but it runs on an Accenture-specific platform with its own question bank and a 20 to 30 second response window per question.

If my company uses Versant, does my SVAR prep transfer?

Yes, almost entirely. Both tests measure pronunciation, fluency, comprehension, and sentence production under time pressure. The task labels differ but the prep principle is identical: read aloud daily, practice repeating sentences after audio, and build the habit of speaking in complete sentences without filler sounds. A student who clears SVAR comfortably is well-positioned for Versant, and vice versa.

How is IBM's Business Communication Test different from SVAR and Versant?

IBM's Business Communication Test is a written verbal-ability test with 15 questions covering grammar, synonyms, antonyms, active-passive voice, and formal email etiquette. No microphone or speaking component is involved. The 40th percentile cutoff is required to advance. It tests written communication competency, not spoken fluency, so SVAR or Versant prep does not substitute for IBM BCT grammar revision.

Can I face both SVAR and Versant in the same placement cycle?

Yes. Applying to companies in the same cycle that use different platforms means you may sit both. Concentrix uses Versant; Deloitte USI also uses Versant; companies using AMCAT pipelines will use SVAR. If you are covering multiple employers, keep both test formats in your prep rotation. The additional time required is small because the underlying spoken-English skill is the same.

What score do I need on Versant for BPO and consulting roles?

Versant scores on a 20 to 80 scale. For entry-level voice-process roles, scores in the mid-50s to mid-60s are generally competitive. For international voice and consulting tracks, the practical target is 65 and above. Exact cutoffs are not published by employers; check with your recruiter or placement cell for the specific drive requirements.
